Curriculum - Fraser

• Consists of Years 9 to 10. 
• There are two main learning goals. They are: for students to learn key competencies like Thinking, Relating to others, using language, symbols and texts, managing self and Participating and contributing; and to acquire adaptive expertise - the ability to apply meaningful knowledge and skills flexibly and creatively in different situations. Knowledge is important but so too are the key competencies to use knowledge in creative, innovative and productive ways - mainly to earn a living and to contribute to society.
• The main achievement goal is: to prepare students to be ready to achieve at NCEA Level 2.
• The Junior curriculum is based on 7 Learning Principles: Learners at the centre, Learning is a social activity, emotions are important to learning, recognising individual differences, stretching all students, assessment for learning, building connections across all areas of knowledge.
• The main teaching approaches, are a combination of: guided learning, project based learning, and Skills.
• There is flexible grouping within the class and across classes, throughout the year and its  dependant upon the learning needs of students. 

 

Single and Double Learning Hubs

Classes are called Learning Hubs

• Double Learning Hubs: A team of 3 teachers who are responsible for the learning of 50 students in a hub class. 2 teachers are always present in the classrooms. The collective strengths of the teaching team are utilised to maximise learning impact.
• Single Learning Hubs: The students remain in one classroom, except for Options. They will have 5 teachers who go to them, instead of the students going to 5 different classrooms. We are trying to reduce the movement of junior students as much as possible around the school during timetabled classes.
• Overall the Junior School looks a lot like your child’s Intermediate experience.
• Option teachers are responsible for the learning in their specialist area, in specialist classrooms.
