Vegetarian Chinese Cooking


Learn flavour packed, plant based dishes with Shu-Lei Huang

Discover the joy of vegetarian Chinese cooking in this hands-on course led by Shu-Lei Huang, a passionate vegetarian who has been cooking and sharing vegetarian food for many years. Shu-Lei believes vegetarianism supports both personal health and the environment, and she loves helping others learn how to create delicious, satisfying meat-free meals.

This course is perfect for beginners and confident home cooks alike who want to explore traditional Chinese flavours using vegetarian ingredients.

What to expect

Each class includes:

  • Watching a live cooking demonstration

  • Making the dish yourself (students bring their own ingredients)

  • Sharing and enjoying the finished dishes together

  • Cleaning up as a group

A relaxed, friendly learning environment where you’ll gain skills you can easily use at home.


Course Menu

Lesson 1: Black Pepper Tofu Steak

Learn how to transform tofu into a golden, flavourful steak using mushrooms, corn, and seasoning, finished with a savoury vegetarian sauce. You’ll also learn:

  • What tofu is and how it’s made

  • How to use tofu’s mild flavour to absorb seasoning

  • Tips for cooking tofu with the perfect texture




Lesson 2: Vegetarian Steak

A visually impressive dish made with potatoes, vegetarian ham, and soy protein. Ideal for special occasions and can be prepared ahead of time.  This lesson focuses on:

  • Combining textures and flavours

  • Shaping and frying for presentation

  • Creating a hearty, satisfying vegetarian main




Lesson 3: BBQ Vegetarian Bacon Roll

A crowd-pleasing dish enjoyed by all ages, using a colourful vegetable filling wrapped in vegetarian bacon and finished with a tasty sauce.  You’ll explore:

  • Balanced fillings with vegetables and spices

  • Rolling and assembling techniques

  • Simple sauces to enhance flavour




Come along, cook, learn, and enjoy great vegetarian food together.  

This course is a wonderful way to build confidence with vegetarian cooking while sharing a meal and experience with others.



PLEASE NOTE:  Students bring their own ingredients each week.

This course is supported by the TEC (Tertiary Education Commission) to assist with literacy, numeracy and wellbeing needs of students. You must attend 80% of the class. At the same time we hope you will learn other useful and interesting skills and have a lot of fun learning with us.
